Viol Fantasia 14 Quartet Added April 25th, 2014!!

It seems like most of the fantasias for viols that were written during the renaissance have been found and published. Do you sometimes wish that more music had been composed for viols?? The music below is an attempt to create new music with the same style and feel as the old music. It is music written for viols by a long time viol player. Print a copy of the music for yourself, and play it with friends. I hope that you enjoy it. If you come back to this page in the future there will be more music available. You can write me about what you liked about the music (or didn't like) at kathyandtomk@verizon.net.

The Score and individual parts for each Fantasia are available here in PDF form.  Just click on those you'd like to try:

Viola da Gamba at Powers

Powers Music School in Belmont MA, fifty years old last year, continues to be a valuable resource for viol players around New England. The School maintains a collection of rental viols - 7 basses, 6 tenors and 4 trebles. Instruments may be available to non- Powers students, if they are not required for the School's viol program. On June 13, 2015 Powers again partnered with the Viola da Gamba Society of America and its New England chapter by providing ten instruments for the Gamba Garden, a threehour “petting zoo” staffed by local viol players at the Boston Early Music Festival. Powers commitment to supporting the early music community is part of the legacy of the late Ellen Powers, viol player and first Director of the School, and the many generous donors of viols, bows, and cases over the years.

Powers has viols available in all sizes for rental. Rates are as follows:

>One year rate (Sept. to Sept.) $400

>Rate per term (4 months) $200

>One time introductory rate (3 months) $100

Instruments may be available to rent throughout the year.

To enquire about renting a viol, contact Evan Louden at 617-484-4696, or by email at registrar@powersmusic.org.

Powers also offers Viol Consort Classes and lessons with Jane Hershey. Currently classes meet on Tuesday from 11:00-12:30 and 1:30-3:00. Lessons may be arranged by contacting the Registrar.

Children interested in playing the viol are especially welcome at Powers, with instrument rental fees waived for any young student enrolling in the School. For information about the 2015-2016 calendar and other information, visit www.powersmusic.org

Powers welcomes donations of both hard and soft viol cases for bass violas da gamba. Our cases have been used hard for many years, and replacements in good condition are welcome. Please contact Powers Music School if you have an unneeded case to donate. The School also gladly welcomes financial gifts for the maintenance of the Powers Viol Collection.
