Wieland Kuijken Residency in the Boston area in March, 2011
The
Viola da Gamba Society of New England presented
a
workshop led by Wieland
Kuijken, one of the most influential and
inspired viol players and teachers of the 20th
century. Mr.
Kuijken has had a pivotal role in the rediscovery of viol repertoire
and technique, and is a vital figure in the world of early music.
Two simultaneous viol ensemble workshops took place at Hancock United Church of Christ in Lexington Massachusetts, March 14-19, 2011: the Kuijken Residency for young/emerging pre-professional and semi-professional viol players, and the Consort Intensive for the larger viol playing community. The music for the week explored the ever-widening repertoire for viol consort, from vocal works of the 17th century to canzonas, fantasias, keyboard transcriptions and later ensemble music for viols.
The Kuijken Residency The Consort Intensive Concerts with Mr.Kuijken The Kuijken ResidencyJane Hershey, Director
This six-day workshop provided a rare opportunity for rising viola da gamba players to rehearse and perform ensemble music under the musical direction of Wieland Kuijken. Open by audition to twelve players, the workshop culminated in a concert on Saturday March 19 at Longy School of Music’s Pickman Hall in Cambridge. The week also provided daily opportunities for master classes with Mr. Kuijken on solo and duo repertoire. These afternoon master classes, as well as some ensemble rehearsals, were open to auditing by the general public and by participants in the Consort Intensive. Jane Hershey and Laura Jeppesen were on hand to assist Mr. Kuijken, and participated in the ensembles.
The Consort IntensiveMary Springfels, Director
This VdGS-NE workshop welcomed out-of-town players to take part in a unique week of consort playing. Although participation in the full week was encouraged, players were able to register for any number of days, from March 14-18. Each day began with a short introduction, led by Mary Springfels, and looked at topics of interest for that day. Playing sessions followed, with Mary rotating between consorts to give time to everyone. Preformed consorts were welcome; Repertoire ranged from Franco-Flemish vocal and instrumental works to madrigals and fantasias and later ensemble music for viols. Afternoons were dedicated to auditing Mr. Kuijken’s coaching of the Residency ensembles, and master classes.
In addition to the March 19, 2011 concert at the Longy School of Music by Mr. Kuijken, members of Kuijken Residency Workshop, Jane Hershey, Laura Jeppesen, and Mary Springfels, several other concerts will feature Mr. Kuijken during March, 2011.(For more information on the Longy concert, please go to www.longy.edu. )
