Viola da Gamba Society - New England

Concert by Ralph Meulenbroeks, Solo Viola da Gamba

Soloist Ralph Meulenbroeks

St Peter's Church, Weston Mass.

On the evening of September 7th, 2004, a delightful concert of solo viola da gamba music was presented in the sanctuary of St. Peter's on the Boston Post Road in Weston, Massachusetts. Viola da gamba players and lovers of early music came from all over the Boston area to hear the exceptional playing of Ralph Meulenbroeks. The performance was remarkable for the clarity of the sound, the virtuostic playing, and the combination of lightness and passion that were portrayed through each piece. In addition, the layout of the performance area enabled the audience to be quite close to Mr. Meulenbroeks as he played. The New England area was but one of the stops on Mr. Meulenbroeks tour, which included Paris, and Germany as well. Earlier on the same day, WGBH radio was the venue for a live performance of Tobias Hume's music at noon time, as well as an interview in which Mr. Muelenbroeks shared his perspective on playing music and his enthusiasm for the viola da gamba.

The concert that we enjoyed that evening will be remembered for a long time to come, and I personally look forward to hearing Ralph Meulenbroeks on his next tour with great anticipation.
