Classes

Please put a number next to each class description according to your preference (eg. The number one (1) would
indicate your first choice, and so on). Each student will get at least one of his/her top three choices. Clarification:
these classes will be taught in each of the three class sessions, so by the end of the day you will have taken three
of these classes and worked with three different faculty members.

[ ] Amavi, Desperavi, Triumphavi: A Feast of East . The consort music of Michael East offers multiple
opportunities for improving your viol playing skills, no matter what your playing level might be. East’s fantasias
often juxtapose the serious and sustained with the light and sprightly. The latter quality is enhanced by clean
articulation, so we will be putting special attention on this skill!

[ ] Begging, borrowing, stealing: musical arrangements from the repertoire of other instruments.
The viola da gamba has a wonderful idiomatic repertoire, but sometimes it is fun to wander into other realms.
This class will look at music which was originally written for other instruments and other contexts. Prepare to be
surprised!

[ ] Pavans: Ferrabosco, Dowland, Lawes and others.. The Pavan was an elegant form, a favorite of viol
composers from Holborne to Lawes, especially Ferrabosco and Dowland. Its panoramic form challenges players
to sustain their ideas (and their bows) and encourages variety in interpretation.

[ ] The viol players songbook. Madrigal style as interpreted by great composers for the viol - Lupo, Ward,
Coperario, Gibbons, and others. Learning to sing with your viol is an important and sought after skill for players
of all levels. This class will explore the rudiments of shaping vocal lines and playing rhetorical phrases.

[ ] Divide and conquer: One of the essentials of effective consort playing is the ability to fit all the little notes
cleanly in time with the big ones, while still maintaining the shape and gesture of the individual line. This is an
issue at every level of playing, from the simplest dances to the most complex fantasia repertoire. We will work
on techniques for playing clean subdivisions of the beat, focusing on creating a flowing line within the context of
a clear pulse, using repertoire appropriate to the level of the ensemble.

Please circle your level for the instrument(s) you wish to play:

Treble B LI MI HI A
Tenor B LI MI HI A
Bass B LI MI HI A
